Thom's Thum
starts with the idea of a customized thumb grip, but takes a quantum leap forward by
accommodating changes in the size of the bowler's thumb during the course of play.

This
patented device is created in two parts:
First, an outer sleeve that is permanently glued into a
bowling ball, and second, a removable, customized insert thumb grip that can travel from
ball to ball. A unique, dual-locking design keeps the insert firmly in the sleeve.
The inserts are presently manufactured in 20 different sizes, so a bowler can select the
size that best fits his or her thumb, plus sizes slightly smaller and larger to suit the
tendency of their thumb to swell or shrink. |

Instead of having to use tape or other
devices to be able to use a ball, the novel two-part design of Thom's Thum enables the
bowler to simply swap out the grips. |

options in removable inserts also allows bowlers to play when they might not have been
able to in the past. If a bowler sustains a cut or other injury during the week and is
wearing a bandage, his options were either to not bowl, or to have the ball re-drilled. By
simply using a slightly larger removable insert, the thumb is protected, and the game can
go on. |

Because bowlers need
comfort, consistency, and convenience, inserts can be changed, or moved from one ball to
another, in mere moments. The outer sleeve, which has a small square notch at the bottom,
is permanently installed like an ordinary one-piece grip.The customizable grip, which fits
inside, is inserted and removed by the bowler with a simple flathead screwdriver. First,
you push the small tab inside the insert into the slot in the sleeve. Then, by tightening
the screw at the base, the insert is locked securely in place. Because each insert can be
customized at the pro shop to fit any shaped thumb, there's far less need for tape or
other rigging. |
