Step 1: Installation of A&B Sleeves & Inserts
Layout ball as you would for any drilling. Mark the center of the thumb hole. Drill thumb hole exactly 3 3/32 deep (1 3/8” drill bit for A’ sleeves 1 1/4 drill bit for B” sleeves). You must be sure that you drill to the exact same depth and pitches on each ball that you are going to install the same inserts into to assure true fit of the insert. Do not drill the hole deeper than 3 3/32. The flange is not to hold the sleeve from going deeper than 3”; the purpose of the flange is for alignment only. Clean the hole free of dust and debris and try the sleeve into hole for size. If installing into a previously drilled ball, be sure to drill to the center of the existing hole to maintain the same span.
Step 2: Installation of A&B Sleeves & Inserts
We suggest that you install all sleeves to accept the use of oval inserts, as the bowler may later decide to use oval inserts, the ball will then be set up for oval use. Insert an oval insert that is comfortable into the outer sleeve and insert the complete unit into the ball. You can determine the proper angle by turning the complete unit until the customer feels comfortable with the angle. Scribe a mark on the ball inline with the mark on the top of the flange. Remove the unit from the ball, and remove the insert from the sleeve. The outer sleeve is now ready to be glued into the ball. Rough the outer surface of the sleeve as you would with a slug. (It is recommended to use 5 minute epoxy to install sleeves to allow movement once inserted into ball.) Carefully apply epoxy to the sleeve, avoid the area around the locking slot. Being sure to align the mark on the top of the sleeves flange to the mark earlier scribed on the ball, firmly seat the sleeve into the ball. Allow the epoxy to set before proceeding to next step.
Step 3: Installation of A&B Sleeves & Inserts
Once the outer sleeve has been glued into the ball, mill off the sleeve flange flush with the ball surface using a router or a plug cutter in drill press. Install the insert into the ball, rotate so the pins on the bottom of the insert align with the holes in the bottom of the sleeve. (It is not necessary to use excessive force when turning the insert; when in proper position the insert will drop in place and will not turn.) Insert a flat head screwdriver into the slot in the locking device, and slide into locked position. Tighten the screw head snug to assure proper locking of slide bar. The purpose of the screw is only to hold the locking device in position, so there is no need to over tighten.
Step 4: Installation of A&B Sleeves & Inserts
With the insert locked in place in the sleeve, mill the insert flush with the ball surface as was done with the outer sleeve. Repeat the process for any additional inserts. Bevel and finish the inserts as you would any type of slug. The inserts are easily shaped using standard pro shop tools and equipment. When using a bevel sander take care to not over heat to avoid creating a ridge in the inserts. Inserts can also be wet sanded in ball spinner to give a super smooth surface, or sanded dry to whatever surface is desired. If customer already has Thom’s Thum sleeve in the ball, only step 4 will be required.
